Pet Food Recall List

Pet owners often wonder about pet food recalls.

How do I know what foods have been recalled? Where can I find a complete petfood recall list and how can I ensure the safety of my pet’s food?

There are literally hundreds of pet food brands that have been recalled since March 2007 (the date that the FDA’s list begins). Iams, Science Diet and Eukanuba are just a few of the popular brand names that appear on the list. It is important to note that once a food item is listed, it remains on the FDA’s recall chart even if no new recalls have been made recently so in my opinion you should still avoid it.

Check out a few recent pet food recalls listed below to help you make healthy decisions for your pet. Stay up-to-date on pet foods and treats to avoid by regularly reviewing the list of recalled pet products.

  • The Peanut Corporation of America’s (PCA) Blakely, Georgia facility, American Health Kennels, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for some of their baked dog treats containing peanut butter supplied by PCA. The Blakely PCA facility is the subject of an ongoing U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation into potential Salmonella contamination of peanut butter.
  • Potential problems with VeggieDents Dog Chews was recognized in May by veterinarian researchers. Symptoms, are similar to the chews that were made in China that sickened pets in the US and Australia last year were excessive drinking of water, and frequent urination.
  • In May 2009 NUTRO Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE COMPLETE CARE Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO MAX Cat Dry Foods with Best If Used By Dates between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier. Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium.

This pet food recall does not affect any Nutro dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states, as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel. Consumers who have purchased these products should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their pets. Cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms such as refusal of food, reduction in appetite, diarrhea or vomiting or weight loss.
