Vegetarian Pet Food

Kibbles doesn't cut it Anymore!

Many pet owners enjoy a vegetarian lifestyle and choose vegetarian pet food for their pets. Pets suffer with allergies just like their owners and a vegetarian diet may provide some relief to the symptoms your pet may be experiencing.

There are advantages and disadvantages to a vegetarian diet and while some pet owners firmly believe that it is not a healthy diet there are just as many pet owners pushing for vegetarianism for their pets. As with making any dietary changes always discuss your plans with your veterinarian. Always remember a pets diet must be well balanced and nutritious to provide the essential nutrients and amino acids they require. There are supplements on the market can help you provide a healthy and balanced diet for your pet.

If you are a vegetarian you already have a good idea what to feed your pet but just in case here are some suggestions to help you put their meals together.

Food Suggestions

Cheese, eggs, nuts, textured soy protein, cooked lentils or beans, tofu, seeds (sunflower, sesame). Feed several of these at one meal to get a good balance of amino acids. We are a brown rice eating family so my pooch gets brown rice added to his food but you can use whole grain rice. You may also want to mix a teaspoon of vegetable oil in your pets food to provide some of the essential fatty acids that he needs

Foods to avoid

Raw onions, Macadamia nuts, Grapes and raisins should all be avoided in large enough quantities. Chocolate and other caffeine products should also be avoided as it can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems.
